Mr. John Edward “Johnny” Cookson, 77, died Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, SC. A memorial service will held 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 24, 2019 at Barron Funeral Home with Reverend Keith Hinson officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of Kelley C. Baker, immediately following the service. The interment will be private. Born February 18, 1942 in Chester, SC Mr. Cookson was the son of the late Hope Edward Cookson and Rosa Mae McCaston Cookson. He was a graduate of Thornwell Home for Children in Clinton, SC. Mr. Cookson was a veteran of the US Navy having served aboard the USS Constellation on the forward catapults during Vietnam. He was of the Baptist faith. Johnny was a pipefitter and welder for most of his life and later picked up an absolute love for classic antique cars. He enjoyed making custom stainless steel bracelets, buckles, grills for cars and anything in between. If you could dream it he could make it with his exceptional skills with metal work. He is survived by one son, Johnny Shane Cookson, Sr. (Kanya) of Chester, SC; one daughter, Kelley Cookson Baker (Michael) of Chester, SC; six grandchildren, Johnny Shane Cookson, Jr of Rock Hill, SC, Brianna Leigh Cookson of York, SC, Sara Katherine Baker, Faythe Elizabeth Cookson, John Phillips “J.P.” Baker and Clara Marie Cookson all of Chester, SC; two great grandsons, Jethro Lee “Junior” Lipsey, Jr. and Jebediah Lee Lipsey both of York, SC; a special niece, Terry Morrison, Russell Springs, KY and his beloved four legged son Bandit. To his partner and caregiver Agnes Crocker Moore, a very special “Thank You” for her many years of dedication. The family would like to recognize some special friends of Johnny’s, Stephen Plyler, Clarence “Sweet Pea” Freeman, Charlie Blanchett, the late Bill Kirkpatrick, Larry Vance, Gordon Timmons, Mike Partain, Mark Ledbetter, Gene & Kay Loving and Bob Shannon. He was preceded in death by his wife of thirty-eight years, Hazel Gee Cookson, two brothers, Marshall Lee Cookson and Kenneth “Shine” Mobley and a sister Lillian Lousie Luttrell. In honor of Johnny’s life and also in his memory the family request any and all classic, rat rod and antique car owners to come together for one last ride around town.
