Michael P. Shaffer

Manager

Michael was born and raised in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He began his work in funeral home ministry in 1983 as an apprentice at Thompson Funeral Home Orangeburg, SC. He is a graduate of Edisto High School, University of South Carolina at Coastal, Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science and attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Michael is also a bi-vocational Pastor where he currently serves a local congregation. Michael is the husband of Karen Tyler Shaffer, also employed with Barron and Dantzler-Baker Funeral Homes. He has been employed with Barron Funeral Homes since 1994.

James R. Baker

At age 18, James knew the funeral service profession was the only career for him. Following graduation from Great Falls High School, he enrolled at Cincinnati College of Embalming and graduated in March of1964. Soon after, he married Barbara Mitchum of Georgetown, SC. Married for 44 years, they have two children and four grandchildren.

Early in his career, James was employed with McAlister’s Funeral Home in Charleston, SC for two years. In 1966 James and Barbara along with R.M. Dantzler established the Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home in Great Falls.In January 1995 James and Barbara purchased Barron Funeral Home in neighboring Chester, SC. James served as president and his wife Barbara as vice-president and secretary of Dantzler-Baker and Barron Funeral Homes until the firms joined Rollings Funeral Service, Inc. in 2005.

James is a member and deacon at First Baptist Church in Great Falls and is a past master and past secretary of Great Falls Masonic Lodge # 277.South Carolina Governor Richard Riley appointed him to the SC State Board of Funeral Service in 1985. Beloved by his hometown neighbors,James was twice elected mayor of Great Falls and has served the Chester County Chamber of Commerce as board member; in 1982 he was elected Chester County’s ambassador for economic development. Dedicated to all aspects of community service, James has also given his time and talent as a board member for Chester Department of Social Services, as first chairman of the Great Falls Economic Development Commission, and past president of the Great Falls Merchants Association and Optimist Club.Currently James serves on the advisory board of First Citizens Bank.

James has always believed that “SERVICE” is the primary ingredient which preserves the very foundation of all we do as funeral directors.

Karen T. Shaffer

Office Manager

Karen was born and raised in Loris, South Carolina. She is a graduate of Loris High School and attended Horry-Georgetown Technical College. Karen is a talented cook and enjoys trying new recipes and preparing meals that she and her husband enjoy and share with friends. She is also an avid gardener and enjoys tinkering with indoor plants as well as a year round garden. Karen is the wife of Michael Shaffer who is also part of the Barron staff. She has been employed with Barron Funeral Home since 1994.

Dr. Steve Bishop

Chaplain

Dr. Steve Bishop considers it an honor to serve as Chaplin for Barron Funeral Home. He has served in that capacity from 1995 to present. Steve and his wife Shelia were married in June 1971. They have three adult children Brantly Taylor, Chara Malone, and Jordan Bishop. They also have three amazing grandchildren Caden Taylor, Kendal Malone, and Skye Bishop. Steve has served as pastor of Chester Second Baptist Church, now known as Chester Freedom Ministries from February 1980 to present.

Terry D. Tinker

Funeral Assistant

Terry Tinker was born in Chester County in 1947 to the late Roy V. Tinker and Rebecca Ferguson Tinker. He is a graduate of Chester High School class of 1965 and married his bride Linda Traylor Tinker in 1969. Together they are the proud parents of two daughters Wendy Tinker Bass (Bobby), Anna Tinker Faircloth (Jamie) and were blessed with four grandchildren: Evan Dwight Bass, Julia Preston Faircloth, Brady Coleman Bass and Anna Kathryn Faircloth. Tragically their oldest grandson Evan Dwight Bass was killed on April 10, 2020. Evan was certainly the "apple of their eyes" for being the first born and six years before Julia was born. They are active members of Chester Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church where Terry served many terms on the Diaconate.

Terry is retired from the City of Chester Fire Department where he was employed for 27 years serving as Assistant Fire Chief. Terry attended Gardner Webb College, the SC Fire Academy, SC Criminal Justice Academy, and has received many certifications pertaining to advanced firefighting and Coroner Training. Terry was appointed as Chester County Coroner by the Governor in 2005 and to date he still remains as Coroner. Terry received many awards and recognitions while serving as a Fireman and as Coroner. In 2016 Terry was selected as South Carolina Coroner of the year.

Terry is a great asset to the funeral home family. He has a very compassionate heart for those dealing with the loss of a loved one. Terry delights in spending time with his grandchildren, Julia, Brady and Anna Kathryn and vacationing with his family but most of all his bride of 53 years. Terry has been employed with Barron for over 35 years.

Scott Willard

Funeral Assistant

Scott was born and raised in Union, SC but has been a resident of Chester, SC since 1982. He is married to the former Teresa Morrison (38 Years) of Hartsville, SC. and they have one daughter, Melia who is married to Khoury Hammonds. They have presented Scott & Teresa with 2 beautiful granddaughters, Scottie Belle and Gracie Lynn. Scott is a retired Corporal with SC Highway Patrol, having served in Darlington and Chester counties for 22 years. Scott currently works as a Radio Technician for the SCDOT in Chester and is the owner of StarCom 2 Way Radio. Scott has been employed with Barron Funeral Home since 2003.

Robert Abell

Funeral Assistant

Robert is the husband of Amy Abell. They have two children, Cole Abell and Kaleb McKee. Robert is an excellent marksman and has won numerous events in clay shooting, which is one of his favorite pastimes. He also is with "Ducks Unlimited". Robert is a member of Chester Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church and Captain of the Lewis Fire Department. He is a graduate of Chester High School and attended University of South Carolina-Union. He was raised in the community of Lowrys. Robert has been employed with Barron since 2009.

Trey Counterman

Trey was born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1997 to April Porter Burton and Lee Counterman. ln 2015, he was part of the first graduating class at York Preparatory Academy. ln 2019, he graduated from Presbyterian College with a Dual Degree in Business Management and Accounting. Trey is the oldest of four. He is currently employed with Chester County Department of Juvenile Justice. Trey is part of the Great Falls Lions Club, Chester County Rotary Club, and Optimist Club of Rock Hill, SC. He enjoys volunteering at Special Olympics, Mentoring Youth, Palmetto Boys State, and Victory Junction. Trey's motto is Dum Vivimus Servimus, "While We Live, We Serve". Trey has been employed with Barron Funeral Home since 2021.

James W. "Jim" Fuller

James W. "Jim" Fuller was born, raised and educated in Columbia, SC. He is married to Janice Derrick Fuller. He has one daughter, two sons, two step-daughters and ten grandchildren. Jim was founder and C.E.O. of Palmetto Contact Lens that later merged with Diversified Ophthalmics. He came out of retirement in 2005 taking the position of President of the Chester County Chamber of Commerce and officially retired again in 2016. He is very active in the following: Council of Governments for the Catawba Region; Rotary Club; United Way; Chester County School Board of Trustees and past chairman of the Chester A.R.P. Board of Deacons. He enjoys reading and gardening in his free time. Jim has been employed with Barron since 2017.

Vic Hayes

A native of Hampton County, South Carolina, Vic came to Chester in 1990 after being employed with South Carolina Highway Patrol. Then transitioning to work for the Department of Natural Resources in 2000 where he spent the rest of his career and eventually retired in 2013. Vic still serves as a Deputy Wildlife Officer with the Department of Natural Resources. He has two teenage daughters Rynn and Victoria. In his spare time he enjoys working on and restoring classic vehicles. Vic has been employed with Barron Funeral Home since 2013.

Dale Holmes

Dale was born and raised in Chester County, South Carolina. He is a graduate of Chester High school and has numerous certifications as an accomplished mechanic. He is retired Shop Foreman from the South Carolina Department of Transportation School Bus Maintenance Shop. He is the proud father of three boys and five grandchildren. He also serves the community of Chester with the Chester County Coroner's office. Dale has been employed with Barron Funeral Home since 2015.

Jamie Jennings

Jamie was born and raised in Chester. He attended the schools of Chester and is married to Lisa. They have four children and two grandchildren. Jamie is making his career with Chester Wastewater Recovery. Jamie is grateful to be a part of the "ministry" of Barron Funeral Home. Jamie has been employed with Barron since.
