Our History
Barron Funeral Home traces its roots back to 1908, when James A. Barron purchased the L.D. Childs Undertaking business in downtown Chester. Mr. Barron operated the funeral home on Gadsden Street until his death in 1939, while preparations were underway to move the business to its present location.
James I. Barron, son of the founder, completed the move to 133 Wylie Street, establishing the funeral home in the former residence of Dr. Sumter Davega, a respected Chester physician. He continued the tradition of service until his death in 1963.
Following his passing, the funeral home was purchased by his son-in-law, William Kirkwood Stringfellow, Jr., and his wife, Jerry Barron Stringfellow. Together, they continued serving Chester families until Mr. Stringfellow’s retirement in 1995.
The funeral home was later acquired by James and Barbara Baker of Great Falls, South Carolina. Today the staff of Barron Funeral Home continue the tradition of compassionate, professional service and collectively represent more than 100 years of experience caring for families in Chester and the surrounding communities.
