Our Beginnings

Historical records reflect that in 1908, James A. Barron purchased the L.D. Childs Undertaking business. Mr. Barron operated the funeral home, which was located on Gadsden Street in downtown Chester, until his death in 1939. At the time of his death, the Barrons were in the process of moving to the present location at 133 Wylie Street.

James I. Barron, son of the late J. A. Barron, competed the move to Wylie Street, locating in the former home of Dr. Sumter Davega, distinguished physician and surgeon (Dr. Davega died in 1902). Mr. Barron continued serving Chester families until his death in 1963. Shortly afterwards, William Kirkwood Stringfellow, Jr., son-in-law of Mr. Barron, purchased the funeral home. He and his wife, Jerry Barron Stringfellow, continued the business until his retirement in 1995. The business was then sold to James and Barbara Baker of Great Falls. The Bakers are not strangers to Chester and neighboring communities, since they have owned and operated the Dantlzer-Baker Funeral Home in Great Falls for a number of years. They continue to operate both funeral homes in their respective locations. The present staff of Barron Funeral Home collectively represents over 100 years experience.
