Mrs. Mary Athene Britton Gough, 81, of 123 Sunset Drive, died Wednesday morning, January 23, 2013 at the Wayne T Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill, SC. A memorial service will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, January 26, 2013 at First Baptist Church Chester with the Reverend Clay Waldripofficiating.The family will receive friends at the home of Beverly and Bob Robinson, 109 Sunset Drive, Friday, January 25, 2013 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm and also immediately following the service in the social hall of the church.. Born November 12, 1931 in Great Falls, Mrs. Gough was the daughter of the late James Leonard and Edith Rogers Britton and the widow of Samuel Worthy Gough. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church, serving life long roles as teacher and member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class as well as an active member of the Church Bereavement Committee. A graduate of Chester High School, Mrs. Gough served as Vice President of Gough Oil Company, a Jaycee-Ette for the Junior Chamber of Commerce, a volunteer at Chester County Hospital, a co-chairman of the first Zoning Committee of Edisto Beach andthe secretary of an annual non-profit fundraiser corporation at Edisto Beach. In addition, she was enthusiastic and lifelong supporter ofClemson University. Mrs. Gough was a supportive and loving mama to her children: Samuel Leonard Gough and wife Jane, of Fayetteville GA, Samuel Worthy Gough, Jr.and wife Jill of Marietta GA, James Britton Gough and Nancy Beltz Wilburn of Chester and Beverly Gough Robinson and husband Bob of Edisto Beach and Chester.She was a proud and beloved Deedee to her grandchildren: Grier Gough Hoelzer and her husband Drew, Brittany Hatch Reed and her husband Daniel, Jackson Griffis Hatch and fiancée Kelly,James Britton Gough, Jr. and fiancée Whitleighand Miss Annie Alston Gough and her great granddauther, Eliza Lynn Hoelzer. Mrs. Gough is also survived by nieces and nephews including Dr. EdithMiller and her husband Dr. Jim Hall who were always available and comforting during her hospitalization time in Charlotte. Mrs. Gough was predeceased by hersisters Jacqueline Britton Miller andJimmye Britton Hale and a brother, Roger Richard Britton. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church General Fund, PO Box 518, Chester, SC 29706. Barron Funeral Home is in charge of the service.
