CHESTER: Julian Grant Faust, 83, of 1225 Saluda Road, died Friday August 21, 2009 at Chester Regional Nursing Center. He was a son of the late Hilton Glenn Faust and Annie Grant Faust. A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Monday, August 24, 2009 at Bethel United Methodist Church with Reverend Harry Gindhart and Reverend David Sealy officiating. Interment will be at Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery with Masonic Rites and full Military honors. After graduating from Chester High School in1944, Mr. Faust went to war at the age of eighteen. After basic training he became a part of General George Patton?s Army in the ArmoredTank Corps, 37th Battalion. On Christmas day 1944, a German submarine attacked his ship. Mr. Faust?s ship sank that submarine. In March of 1945 Mr. Faust volunteeredas part of a strike force sent to Hammel to free 15,000 American, English and Russian POWs. They were told that they only had a 50/50 chance of survivingthe mission. Later they realized that they were sent on a suicide mission toward Berlin as decoys to draw out the panzer divisions so General Patton could ride triumphantly into Berlin. AsMr. Faust?s battalion was freeing the prisoners, Faust and his tank were surrounded by Germans. He and 209 fellow soldiers were captured and lined up to be shot but were spared. Of these only 36 survived. At his release, heweighed only 97 pounds. Faust served as an MPforthe rest of his military career and retired as a corporal. Afterwards he served in the Army Reserves until 1949. Under the GI bill he studied to become an electrician at the University of South Carolina. For forty years, Julian operated his own electrical business, J.G.Faust Electrical Contractors of Chester, SC.After retiring as an electricianhe worked at AmericanFeed and Seed. Mr. Faust was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church for 68 years and served on many committees throughout the years. He was a member of Chester Masonic Lodge #18, Order of the Eastern Star, Yorkrite, Hejaz Shrine, American Legion, Loyal Order of the Moose, Woodmen of the World,VFW, DAV and American Ex-POWs. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sarah Adeline Carter Faust, two daughters, Karen F. Stevens and her husband Ricky and Lisa F. Isenberg and her husband Perry both of Chester, SC, three granddaughters, Lauren Faust and Chelsea Isenberg both of Chester, SC and Jessie I. Roth and her husband Herman of Fort Mill, SC, three brothers, Glenn Faust, Jr. and Bob Faust both of Chester, SC and Charles Faust of Tampa, FL, one sister, Frances F. Lee of Blackstock, SC and a special Aunt Lillian Casebolt. Mr. Faust was preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa Lynn Faust and a brother, Bill Faust.
