CHESTER: Mrs. Wilma Allen Mayer, 91, died Monday, March 21, 2011 at her home.The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, March 25, 2011 at First Baptist Church of Chester with Rev. Clay Waldrip officiating.Interment will follow in Chester Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Barron Funeral Home, 133 Wylie St., Chester, SC. Mrs. Mayer was born January 25, 1920 in Campobello, SC and was the daughter of the late Eddie Monroe Allen and Mamie Nance Ashmore Allen.She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and worked as a clerk for Western Union. She was a Meals on Wheels volunteer and taught Adult Literacy.An avid gardener, she maintained a beautiful yard for as long as she was physically able and loved animals.Mrs. Mayer was a member of First Baptist Church of Chester where she taught the Gleaners Sunday School class and sang in the choir. She is survived by one son, Thomas Mayer of Chester; two daughters, Nancy Babits and her husband Larry of Greenville, NC and Margaret Evans and her husband Gary of Columbia, SC; three grandchildren, John Babits of Greenville, NC and Emily Evans and Kyle Evans of Columbia, SC; and one brother, Mutt Allen of Pelion, SC.She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Mayer, a daughter, Melissa Thompson, a great grandson, Mason Henry Lux, one brother, San Allen, and two sisters, Pauline Harris and Alma Cooper.
