William Ray "Woody" Thompson

William "Woody" Ray Thompson, 83, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2024 at home. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 15 at 11:00 am at Liberty Baptist Church in Chester, SC, officiated by Rev. Earl Ogburn. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until 11:00 am . Please dress casually. Woody was born on June 7, 1940 in New Orleans, LA. He was the son of Vera Thompson Wood and Harris Hilton of Tylertown, Miss. He was raised by his grandfather, Buck Thompson, in Ponchatoula, LA. Woody was an electrician, wood worker, and overall Mr. Fix-It. He had enjoyed retirement after working for many years at Winthrop University, Hickson Corp., and Sun Chemical. Woody loved westerns, his garden, listening to old country music, and spending time with his family. He was also a veteran who served in the US Navy. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters Shirley Stinson and Ann Sumrall and two brothers, Easley Wood and Everette Wood. Woody is survived by his wife of 59 years, Frances Thomas Thompson; his 3 children, Allen "Ray" Thompson of Chester, James Darin "Cledus" Thompson (Brandy) of Chester, and Kristal Thompson Whitmire (Jeremy) of Fort Mill; 5 grandchildren, Seth Thompson, Alex Thompson, Amilyah Whitmire Murrieta (Marco), Skylar Whitmire, and Grayson Whitmire; as well as 2 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, J. W. Wood (Penny), and sister, Gwen Wood of Tylertown, Miss. and numerous nieces and nephews. Woody will be deeply missed by all those who called him Husband, Dad, Pawpaw, Brother, Uncle, and Friend. He will also be missed greatly by his dog, Lulu, who kept watch over him constantly. We know he is enjoying being up in Heaven and reuniting with those who went before him. We love you and miss you, but have peace knowing you have a smile on your face looking down on us. The family would like to thank all the nurses and aides from Agape Hospice, as well as Susan Hinson and also his Pastor Earl Ogburn, for all the wonderful care he received.
