Walter Welchel

Walter Welchel, 72, died Friday, May 23, 2025, at MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center.  A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2025 at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church with Rev. Clay Waldrip officiating.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM Tuesday in the vestibule of the church.  Interment will be private.

Born February 23, 1953 in Chester, SC, Walter was a son of the late Gordon Welchel and Ruth Hancock Howard.  He was a graduate of Chester High School and retired from Custom Remodeling as owner and operator.  Walter was an accomplished striper fisherman and he loved boating.  He was of the Baptist Christian faith.

He is survived by his wife of over 47 years, Vickie Lynn Doolittle Welchel; two children, Jessica Annette Johnston (Louis) of Gilbert, SC and Joseph Alexander Welchel (Amy) of McConnells, SC; two grandchildren, Sophia Belle Johnston and Hoyt Elijah Johnston both of Gilbert, SC; two brothers, Clarence Gordon Welchel (Karen) of Rock Hill, SC and Tommy Howard of Chester, SC; one sister, Dianne Jordan of Chester, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, Walter, was preceded in death by his brother, Randy Welchel and his stepfather, Harry Howard.
