CHESTER, SC Mr. Walter McRufusSteen, 91 of Chester went home to be with our Lord on October 5, 2013 at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, SC.The funeral will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at First Baptist Church Lowrys with Revered MichaelShaffer officiating.The interment will be held at Armenia United Methodist Church Cemetery with full military honors.The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday, October 7, 2013 at Barron Funeral Home. Born March 27, 1922 in Winnsboro, SC, Mr. Steen was a son of the late Grover Cleveland Steen and Emma Maggie Ghant Steen.Heattended the schools of Lowrys and was a veteran of the US Army having servedduringWWII. Mr. Steen was a recipient of the purple heart and was a prisoner of war for over fifteen months in Germany. He was retired from Bi-Lo as a counter supervisor and was a member of First Baptist Church Lowrys where he was a former Sunday School Teacher, R.A. Director and held numerous other offices. Mr. Steen enjoyed raising beef cattle, traveling and smoking his pipe.He was a great story teller having shared his life experiences with scores of friends and family.One of his passions included reading anything but much about history. He is survived by one daughter, JoAnn Steen McNeill of Chester; one son, Tommy Steen and his wife Darlene of Chester; four grandchildren, Chase Steen and his wife Chrissy of Rock Hill, SC, Kaelah Telligman of Chester, Lindsey Smith and her husband Jason of Chester, and Carrie Ancira of Sugarland, TX; eight great grandchildren, Mason and Maddox Steen of Rock Hill, SC, Rylie and John Ross Telligman,Keely Orr and Colt Smith all ofChester, Courtney Sikel and Kimberly Ancira of Sugarland, TX; one brother, Marion Steen of Cayce, SC; daughter-in-law Rose Steen of East Bernard, TX and a special niece Robin Steen of Chester.He was preceded in death by his wife of over sixty-three years, Lillie Stephenson Steen, one son, Donnie Steen, four brothers, James, Vernon, Frank and Grover Steen; two sisters, Ola Mae McMurray and Annie Bell Jones.
