CHESTER Mr. Robert David McKay, 81, died Monday, August 12, 2013 at Providence Hospital in Columbia, SC.A graveside memorial service with Masonic Rites will be held 11:00 AM Friday, August 16, 2013 at Chester Memorial Gardens with Rev. David Sealy officiating.The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Barron Funeral Home. Born May 23, 1932 in Chester, SC, Mr. McKay was the son of the late John Dean McKay and Anna Gordon McKay.He was a 1950 graduate of Chester High School and after graduating he joined the Navy and served on the Destroyer New Port News as a gunner during the Korean War. He married his sweetheart Joyce Black in December 1951. After leaving the Navy in 1954 he went to work for Paul’s Pontiac in Chester where he was a mechanic.He joined the Chester City Police Department October 22, 1956.After leaving the City Police Department he began his duties as Chief Detective with the Chester County Sheriff’s Department.He retired from the Sheriff’s Department with twenty-five years service and began work withChester County Ambulance Department as director where he was also an EMT and Paramedic. He was formerly head of security and risk management at the Chester County Hospital.After retiring from the hospital in2003 he continued working part-time as security director until he began his final retirement.He was a Mason, a successful baseball coach with the Chester Dixie Youth Baseball League and the Women’s Softball League.He was an adult advisor with the youth in 4-H Horse Club and also assisted as an advisor with the RoyalAmbassadors at the Parkway Baptist Church where he was a former member.He was an avid Gamecock Fan, bird hunter, horseman, baseball and football fan and instilled those passions in his children.Mr. McKay was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge #18. He is survived by his daughter, Joy Fleming and her husband Ken Fleming of Chester; one grandson, James Robert “Bo” McKay of Greenville, SC; one daughter-in-law, Cathy B. McKay of Chester; one brother, John “Dink” McKay of Blackstock, SC and one sister, Sandy M. Oliver of Chester, SC.He was preceded in death by a son, Robbie McKay and two sisters, JoAnn Lewis and Charlene Johnson.
