Raymond Clifford Atchison, 83, passed away on Friday, August 8, 2025 at his home in Chester, SC surrounded by family.
Born June 22, 1942, in Sayre, PA, he was one of four boys of the late Frank E. Atchison and Grace E. Atchison. In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by his brothers, Frank Atchison Jr., William “Billy” Atchison and Kenneth Atchison.
He was a Vietnam War Veteran, enlisting in 1960, serving in Vietnam from 1961-1962 in the 93rd Transportation Company, discharged December 1963, and received his Honorable Discharge in August of 1966. After his military service he returned to Owego, NY and began working for IBM as a Staff Communications Analyst and retired after 30 years. He was a Golden Glove boxer at the Boys Club as a teenager. He loved to bowl, hunt and fish, golf and play horseshoes. He played drum and guitar with his brother, who played the guitar, and his nephew who played the accordion with friends playing the fiddle and piano forming their band for many years called The Schaefer 3.
Raymond is survived by his wife of 59 years, Hiwana Juanita Harriger Atchison, Chester, SC; one son, Todd Atchison, Lincolnton, NC; one daughter, Wendy Benfield (Steve), Statesville, NC; five grandchildren, Melissa Flick, Sasha (Wes) Fidler, Dylan (Hannah) Johnston, Jessica and Bobbie Cleveland; 14 great grandchildren with one on the way; one great-great grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews; brother and sister-in-law, Tommy (Hazel) Harriger; and sister-in-law, Wilma Becker.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Samuel Stone of Chester, SC and all of his hospice nurses, social worker, pastor and staff at Agape Care for their compassionate care of Raymond and his family.
The family will receive friends on August 24, 2025 from 2 pm to 3 pm, with the funeral service to follow at 3 pm at Cornerstone Family Worship, 709 Rankin Avenue, Mt. Holly, NC with Reverend Kevin McClure officiating,
