Mr. Ralph Earnest Shaffer, Sr., 81, of 3236 Bamberg Road died Friday, October 16, 2009 at his residence. The funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Monday, October 19, 2009 at Northside Baptist Church, Orangeburg, SC with Dr. Shane Stutzman and Reverend Jim Parnell officiating. Interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery. A native of Loch Lynn, Maryland, Mr. Shaffer was born February 1, 1928,a son of the late James Michael Shaffer and Bertha Harvey Shaffer. He attended the schools of Garrett County, MD,was a veteran of the US Navy Seabees, and was retired from the South Carolina Department of Transportation, School Bus Maintenance Shop where he was Shop Foreman since it was established in 1963. Mr. Shaffer was an avid gardener, archer and motorcyclist. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Margaret Bair Shaffer. Surviving is one daughter, Maureen S. Hughes and her husband Lynn of Cope, SC, three sons, Ralph ?Al? E. Shaffer, Jr. and his wife Susan of Orangeburg, SC, Michael P. Shaffer and his wife Karen of Chester, SC and Kurt R. Shaffer and his wife Sandy of Black Mountain, NC, seven grandchildren, I great grandchild, one brother, M. Paul Shaffer and one sister, Lorene S. Upperman both of Oakland, MD. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Sunday evening at Thompson Funeral Home, Orangeburg, SC.
