CHESTER Mr. Newton P. Osment, 88, died Saturday, October 6, 2012 at his residence.He was the husband of Gwendolyn H. Osment and the son of the late F. Edward Osment and the late Elsie Poole Osment.He was retired from the South Carolina Highway Department with thirty-five years of service having served the last thirteen years as resident maintenance engineer of Chester County.He was a member of First Baptist Church of Chester and active in the Chester Baptist Association. He had served on the Executive Board of the South Carolina State Baptist Convention. In addition to his wife he is survived by one son, Jimmy W. Osment and his wife Glenda of Inman, SC; daughter-in-law Darlene Osment of Cowpens, SC; three step-sons, Gary E. Smith and wife Amy of Villa Rica, GA, Daniel P. Smith and wife Teresa of Chester and Kevin E. Smith, Sr and wife Ann of Mercersburg, PA; one sister, Mae D. Osment of Gaffney, SC; eleven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Betty M. Osment, one son, Michael D. Osment, five brothers and three sisters. The funeral service will be 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at First Baptist Church of Chester with Rev. Clay Waldrip and Rev. Ted Hodges officiating.The interment will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:45 pm. Tuesday in the Church Sanctuary.
