CHESTER, SC: Mary Virginia Atkinson Sanders, 95, affectionately known as “Mae-Mae”, passed into her heavenly home on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at the McCleod-Loris Hospital in Loris, SC. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM Friday, September 7, 2018 at Armenia United Methodist Church fellowship hall.The funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM Friday with Reverend Mike Burgess officiating.The burial will follow in Armenia United Methodist Church Cemetery. Born in Chester, SC, Mrs. Sanderswas a daughter of the late Effie Azilee and James Biggers Atkinson and graduated from Chester High School Class of 1939 and was a devoted Clemson Fan.She was married to the late Boyd W. Sanders, Sr. within a few days of his return from serving in England during World War II.She had the most years of membership in Armenia United Methodist Church and served in many capacities of the church over the years, such as President of the Armenia United Methodist Women’s Circle, Sunday School teacher, choir member and chairperson of many committees.She also served the people of Chester County as the Deputy Clerk of Court for over thirty-five years until her retirement in 1984. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Boyd W. “Buddy” Sanders, Jr, her brothers, Carter and Ralph and sister, Edith Hall and son-in-law, Richard A. Black. Survivors include her daughter, Mary Jo Black; daughter-in-law, Betty Sanders; grandchildren, Bryan, John, Kelley and Richard and great grandchildren, Britton, Jake, Caitie, Jordan, Bailey and Carter; sisters, Catherine Brakefield, Julia Abell, Nell Lynch and sister-in-law, Ethel Sanders.She loved all her nieces and nephews and enjoyed planning large family gatherings.She will be lovingly remembered and missedby all who knew her. The family wishes to express heartfelt love and thanks to caregivers, Carolyn Queen, Sarah Jones, Cynthia Fleming, Catherine Harris and Carol Polk and to the wonderful personnel of McLeod –Loris Hospital.
