Chester Mrs. Mary Janet Alexander Caldwell, 98, formerly of Chester, SC, died Thursday, July 2, 2015, at the Columbia Presbyterian Community.Graveside services will be held t 11:00 AM on Monday, July 6, 2015, at Evergreen Cemetery in Chester.A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday, July 6, at the Presbyterian Communities, 700 DaVega Drive., Lexington, SC with Rev. Fran Bragan officiating. Born on December 7, 1916 in Chester, she was the daughter of the late Edgar McCosh Alexander and Margaret Roddey Alexander.From her parents, she learned high morals and a strong work ethic, traits which she carried throughout her life and endeavored to instill in her own children.She was a graduate of Chester High School and Lander College with a degree in Commercial Science.She was employed as a secretary at the investment firm of Hamilton and Company in Chester for more than 40 years. Mrs. Caldwell was a member of Purity Presbyterian Church in Chester and a former member of Bethel United Methodist Church.She was a former member of the Chester Historical Society, the Chester District Genealogical Society, the Palmetto Literary Club and several bridge clubs. Surviving are her daughters, Janet Caldwell Lewis of Florence and Margaret Caldwell Smith (Jimmy) of Irmo; two granddaughters, one step-granddaughter; three great grandchildren; and three step great grandchildren.Mrs. Caldwell was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, James McCalla Caldwell; her brothers, Edgar Alexander and Roddey Alexander; and her sons-in-law, Bill Lewis and Tim Amick.
