CHESTER: Mary Carpenter Crowder, 84,died on the morning of Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at her home on Fishing Creek Church Road with both of her sons by her side.A graveside service will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Uriel Presbyterian Church Cemetery.The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. Born on February 18, 1932 in Chester County, Mrs. Crowder was a daughter of the late William Pinckney Carpenter and Elizabeth Kirkpatrick Carpenter. Mary graduated Magna Cum Laude from Winthrop College, majoring in English, History, and French and later received a master’s degree in counseling.Also, she received the Fulbright Scholarship to study in France.A retired educator, she taught school in Charlotte, Rock Hill, and Chester.She served Uriel Presbyterian Church and Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church in many ways, but was best known for her piano skills starting at age 12 at Uriel.Also, she was a member of the Mary Adair DAR Chapter of Chester S.C.Mary was preceded in death by her husband, James Wylie Crowder, Jr., her brothers William P. Carpenter, Jr. and Gage Wallace Carpenter. She is survived by her sons, James Wylie Crowder III of Chester, SC and William Randolph Crowder (wife Jennifer) of Rock Hill, SC;grandchildren , James Wylie Crowder IV, Mary Caroline Crowder, William Randolph Crowder, Jr., Cayce Walker Crowder, Abram McLauren Crowder and Claire Elisabeth Crowder; one sister,Elizabeth Carpenter Gallagher of Charlotte; two sisters-in-law, Sue Kimbrell Carpenter and Gail Howell Carpenter both of Chester, S.C. and her brother-in-law Rob Crowder of Mt.
