A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, January 31, 2011 at Bullocks Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Rev. Gary Byrd officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday, January 30, 2011 at Barron Funeral Home, 133 Wylie St., Chester, SC. Born February 2, 1929 in Sharon, SC, Mr. Ashe was a son of the late Marvin Wilks Ashe, Sr. and Birdie Lee Henderson Ashe. He attended the schools of Chester and York Counties and was retired from General Motors Corporation in Michigan with thirty years in Tool & Dye. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during the Korean War as a radio operator. Mr. Ashe was of the Presbyterian faith. Marvin, better known to those who loved him, as ?Pop? was a wonderful man full of life. He always tried to help others, but never wanted anyone to go out of their way for him. He had a smile that could light up a room and he laughed often. He had a caring spirit about him and was not ashamed to shed a tear or two when something touched him; in fact, he said a tear showed love. His love of his family was his greatest joy and he often said he wouldn?t trade ?his family? for any other! His friends were treated like family and his family like friends. One of his favorite sayings from one of his heroes, his grandfather Hugh Brown Ashe, was ?Take care, son. If it?s worth doing, it?s worth doing right?. Pop took that saying to heart and passed it on to those around him. Even though we won?t see him for awhile, we will hold his sweet memories close to our hearts until we meet again. He is survived by two sons, Marvin Allen Ashe and wife Charlotte of the home, and James Edward Ashe and special friend Maria of Michigan; two daughters, Kathy Ashe Lay and husband Bobby of Charlotte, NC and Sharon Ashe Martin and husband Jim of Rock Hill; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; a brother, Harold Ashe and wife Jean of Chester; two sisters, Kathleen Ashe Wright and husband George of Greenville, SC and Nelly Ashe Carter and husband Bob of Union, SC, and a number of nieces and nephews that were all very special to him. He was preceded in death by his wife of forty two years, Frances Horton Ashe, a brother, Aubrey Ashe and a sister, Eloise Miller. Memorials may be made to Agape Hospice, 1317 Ebenezer Rd., Rock Hill, SC 29732. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.barronfuneralhome.com.
