Marlene Rita Mathews Hempel

Mrs. Marlene Rita Mathews Hempel, 84, died Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at her home. A service will be held at a later date. Mrs. Hempel was born November 27, 1939 in Racine, WI and was a daughter of the late Roy Mathews and Irene Labelle Mathews. She was a graduate of St. Catherine’s High School in Racine, WI and a retired teaching assistant from Racine United School District. Mrs. Hempel was an avid Green Bay Packers Fan and Wisconsin Badgers Fan; Marlene loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was also an accomplished cribbage player and played often with her mother and sister. She was a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Racine, WI. She is survived by her husband of over 65 years, James Hempel; four children, Debra Roe of Manteno, IL, Nicholas Hempel of Racine, WI, Kristen Petroviak (Ronald) of Chester, SC and Jason Hempel (Lisa) of Racine, WI; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Ortiz of Zapata, TX; several nieces, nephews and cousins and Ginny McKnight whom she loved as her daughter. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son Scott Anthony Hempel. Memorials may be made to Agape Hospice, 1069 Bayshore Dr. Rock Hill, SC 29732.
