John Simpson Stone III died peacefully in his sleep on March 30, 2021 at Piedmont Medical Center, Rock Hill, South Carolina. A graveside service will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at Chester Memorial Gardens with Reverend John Simpson Stone IV officiating. John was born July 14, 1937, in Chester, South Carolina. He graduated from Chester High School in 1955 and from the University of Georgia in 1960. John was a veteran of theUnited States Army. He married Amelia Heckle, also from Chester, in June of 1962. John’s entire career was spent working for the South Carolina Forestry Commission in Chester, Aiken, Orangeburg, and Camden. He was an active member of First Baptist Church in each of these towns. John enjoyed winning a good game of golf, tennis, and almost any game of cards. He is survived by his wife of over fifty-eight years, Amelia Heckle Stone,Rock Hill, SC;two sons, John Simpson Stone IV (Marisa), Tucson, AZ, and Robert (Bob) Newton Stone,Charlotte, NC.He was Pop Pop to his five grandchildren; Sarah Stone, Nashville, TN, Katherine Stone, Knoxville, TN, Amanda Stone, Anderson, SC, Mary Simpson Stone, Oxford, MS, and Robert Stone, Cullowhee, NC, and asister, Ida Ruff Little, Rock Hill, SC. John was preceded in death by his parents John Simpson Stone, Jr. and Ruby McMeekin Stone, and only seven months ago by his daughter-in-law, Polly Stone of Charlotte, NC.
