John Boyd ?J.B.? McDowell, of Chester, SC passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at the Presbyterian Community of Clinton, SC. The funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 16, 2011 at the Chester A.R.P. Church with Rev. Clint Davis and Dr. Dwight Pearson officiating.The interment will be private.The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Saturday at Barron Funeral Home, 133 Wylie Street, Chester, SC. Born February 17, 1920 in Chester County , Mr. McDowell was the son of William Edward and Lydia Bailey McDowell. Mr. McDowell was a veteran of WWII, a former Chester County Auditor, and long-time Chester County Manager.He was a life-long member of the Chester ARP Church, having served as a deacon, elder, trustee, superintendent of Sunday School, treasurer for over 50 years, and a former chairman of the board of Bonclarken, Flat Rock, NC, which is the conference center of the ARP Church. He was a 50 year member and past president of the Chester Rotary Club, chairman of the Catawba Regional Planning Council for over 30 years, recipient of the Sertoma Club's Service to Mankind Award, a former member of the SC State Development Board, and awarded the South Carolina Order of the Palmetto by Governor David Beasley in 1995 for service to his community and state. Mr. McDowell was a true public servant who loved his family, his community, his state, his country, and his church. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Suddath McDowell, also a resident of Presbyterian Community in Clinton; two daughters, Jane Hardin Tidmore of Denver, CO and Frances Anne McDowell of Chester, SC; two step-daughters, Katherine Cook of Lakeland, FL and Cecile Stanley of Tampa, FL; nine grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
