CHESTER - Jane Brawley May, 91, a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend died surrounded by her family on May 27, 2014, secure in the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, James Dallas May. A native of Chester, Jane was born on May 12, 1923, the daughter of the late Paul Blackburn Brawley and Laura Jane Canupp Brawley. She graduated from Chester High School in 1940 and enjoyed working at G.R. Dawson and Sons before marrying on November 17, 1951, at Purity Presbyterian Church where she had long been a member. Jane and Dallas began their married life in Greenwood, SC, and later made their home in Hendersonville, NC, Spartanburg, SC, Dallas, TX and Chester. Perhaps her happiest times were spent with her family at the beach or anywhere so long as they were together and encouraging children and grandchildren in their endeavors, from dance recitals to soccer games and beyond. One couldn't find a more supportive advocate who praised and celebrated each accomplishment. Her neighbors were dear friends in whose children and grandchildren she delighted. In addition to her loving husband, Dallas, Jane is survived by her daughters, Laura Jane May Oliphant (Rufus Alexander Oliphant, IV) of Chester and Pamela Susan May of Charlotte. Also surviving are her two grandchildren, Hilary Katherine Cox of Twenty-Nine Palms, CA and James Hunter Cox of Chester, who lovingly called her "Mama". Her presence will be missed and her memory cherished at Hunter's upcoming graduation and Hilary's upcoming wedding, both in June. Many nieces, nephews and great-nieces/nephews also survive Jane. She was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers, including her twin brother. The family would like to thank Emma Chisholm, Katie Coleman, Lorraine Duquette, Nora Evans, Cheryl McCrorey, Debbie Shook, and Elizabeth Tillman for the invaluable love, support and care they provided. Services are as follows: Interment will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 30, 2014, at Old Purity Cemetery, 651 Great Falls Highway, Chester, SC, with memorial service to follow at 11:00 am at Purity Presbyterian Church, 135 Wylie Street, Chester, SC with Rev. Trey Hegar Rev. Clint Davis and Rev. Steve Bishop officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall.
