James Hugh Sanders, Sr. went to Glory on April 19, 2024. Born December 8, 1938 to Vardell Knox Sanders and Harris Isham Sanders, Sr. in Rock Hill, SC, he spent fifty-four years in Richburg with the love of his life Edena Hicklin Sanders. Together they raised three children who were proud to call him Daddy. Jim graduated from Rock Hill High School in 1956, Wofford College in 1960, and Winthrop College in 1972. He served both active and reserve duty in the United States Army and was grateful to have the opportunity and proud of that service. Jim was fiercely patriotic and raised his children likewise. Jim was a lifelong learner and educator, teaching many ages and subjects for over 40 years. He had a passion for teaching and reading and fostered this in his family as well. He was also a photographer, helping many families preserve memories of weddings and youth sports teams for 20 years. He enjoyed World War II history and shared his knowledge through stories with all who would listen. Jim dedicated many hours to his work with the Richburg Masonic Lodge #89: PM two years, PDDGM three years, and Secretary eighteen years . He was also a member of York Rite and the Eastern Star. He was a member in long standing at Richburg United Methodist Church where he taught the adult Sunday school for many years. Jim’s greatest legacy is his family. He loved us unconditionally, encouraged us continuously, and supported us wholeheartedly. He and Dena instilled the importance of family devotion. They welcomed all family, so many friends, and countless people who crossed their path into their love and warmth. He was a gracious Southern gentleman. Daddy fought so hard to stay with us. Now the battle is over for this soldier, and his victory is in Jesus. Jim is survived by his loving and devoted wife of fifty-five years, Edena Hicklin Sanders; his three grateful children, Anne Marie Barnes (Tommy) of Edgemoor, Christine Bolton (Lex) of Edgemoor, James H. Sanders, Jr. (Kerry) of Rock Hill; and six grandchildren, Grady Bolton (Sydney), Nicholas Bolton, Lexie Bolton, Grant Barnes, Carter Sanders, and Claire Sanders; sister Anne Glidewell of Savannah, brother Harris I.
