CHESTER -James Meredith ?Jimmy? McCallum, 86, passed away Monday, July 27, 2009. Mr. McCallum was born in Federal Point, the son of James Butler and Agnes Meador McCallum on February 23, 1923. He was a life long resident of Federal Point and a farmer in both St. Johns and Putnam counties, until moving to Palatka, FL in 2000. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Hastings. He graduated as valedictorian of his class of Hastings High School in 1941 and attended Emory at Oxford near Atlanta before enlisting in the Air Force. He also attended Bowdoin College during World War II serving in Weather in the China ? Burma - India Theater, and traveling completely around the world before returning to the farm on Federal Point. On July 24, 1953 he married Margaret Sloan Thomson of Union, South Carolina. Mr. and Mrs. McCallum observed their 56th wedding anniversary on Friday, July 24, 2009. They had 3 children, Mary Catherine ?Cathy? McCallum of Chester, South Carolina; James Meredith McCallum, Jr. and his wife, Polly of Palatka, Florida; Jane Meador Robbins and her husband, John of Chester, South Carolina. Mr. McCallum had 2 grandchildren, Andrew Duncan McCallum and Meagan Elizabeth McCallum of Palatka and 1 brother, Walter Douglas McCallum of Melrose. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, July 30 at Johnson Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka with Pastor Don Burnett officiating. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 1 at Evergreen Cemetery in Chester, South Carolina with Dr. Fred Miller officiating.
