James Saye Hollis

James Saye Hollis, 89, died Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at his home.  A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, June 2, 2024, at Pleasant Grove UMC Cemetery with Rev. Stacy Newton and Rev. Dr. Neely Gaston officiating.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the graveside and other times at the home.

Born September 17, 1934 in Marietta, Georgia, he was a son of the late Joseph Gaston Hollis, Jr. and Augusta Saye Hollis.  James was a graduate of Lewisville High School and Spartanburg Methodist College.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was retired from Bowater as a lab technician.  He was a member of Pleasant Grove UMC where he sang in the choir, served as Sunday School Superintendent and held various other positions in the church.  James was an avid gardener and absolutely loved his vegetable garden.

He is survived by his wife of over 47 years, Judy Greene Hollis; one son, James S. Hollis, Jr. (Melanie) of Chester; two grandsons, Jackson Hollis of Clemson and Reese Hollis of Chester; and numerous nieces and nephews.   In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by a brother, J.B. Hollis, III and a sister, Peggy Jean Hollis Rumph.
