James Edward “Speedy” Baker, Jr. passed away January 21, 2026. He was 71. A funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church Chester Wednesday, January 28 at 2pm with the Reverend Clay Waldrip officiating. A repass will be held for family and friends after the service at Hillside Restaurant in downtown Chester.

Speedy was born November 22, 1954, in Chester, SC to June Anderson Baker and James E. Baker, Sr. Speedy was known for his humility, kindness, and fun-loving spirit.

Upon graduating from Chester Senior High School, Speedy moved to West Virgina for work before returning to Chester where he remained employed with Synthomer, Inc. for 43 years. He earned his Eagle Scout as part of the First Baptist Church Boy Scout Troop, was a member of the Shriners, the Chester Shag Club, and the Chester Men’s Golf Association. He enjoyed riding around in his old green truck, playing golf, going to yard sales, cooking, and spending time with his pride and joy, Caitlin.

Speedy is preceded in death by his mother and father, his brother, Scott Anderson Baker, and his stepfather, Clyde R. Cook.

He is survived by his daughter, Caitlin Baker of Greenville, SC, his nephews Austin Baker (Olivia) of Chester, SC, and Noah Baker of Lawrence, KS, and his niece Carley Baker Stowers (Keon) of Lawrence, KS.
