Chester Miss Edith Faye Grant, 104, died Monday, July 1, 2013, at Wesley Commons Health Center in Greenwood, SC.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 5, 2013, at Barron Funeral Home Chapel.Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Miss Grant was born December 14, 1908 in Chester, SC and was a daughter of the late Harris Mitchell Grant and Marie Walsh Grant.She graduated from Chester High School in 1926 and Winthrop College in 1930 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and did her graduate work with the University of South Carolina and the College of William and Mary in Virginia.She began her teaching career in 1930 and taught in the elementary grades for 41 years with 38 of those years in the Chester City schools.During that time, she served 18 years as principal of Gayle Elementary School. Edith joined Bethel Methodist Church of Chester when she was 12 years old and in the coming years served as a teacher and counselor in the youth division, a teacher in the adult class, a teacher in conference intermediate camps, and a lay delegate to the annual conference.For ten years she was employed at the Methodist assembly grounds of Lake Junaluska, NC.At the time of her death, she held the honor of oldest member of her church.Miss Grant was a resident of Chester until she moved to the United Methodist Retirement Community in Greenwood. She is survived by a niece, Mary Grant Gravely and her husband Stanley; and two nephews, Robert Harris Grant and James Melvin Grant.She was preceded in death by two brothers, Olin Harris Grant and Melvin Lyle Grant.
