Chester: Clyde Thompson Stephens Jr. 81, ofChester, died Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM, Friday, October 23, 2009, at Barron Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bobby McCollum officiating. Interment will be in Chester Memorial Gardens with full honors provided by South Carolina Highway Patrol. A native ofMacon, Georgia, Mr. Stephens was born August 21, 1928, a son of the late Clyde Thompson and Viola Phillips Stephens. He was a graduate of Mauldin High School, Mauldin, SC and Furman University, Greenville, SC and the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, Columbia, SC. He retired in 1986 as a Lieutenant from the South Carolina Highway Patrol having served for 34 years. He was a member of the South Carolina Troopers Association and a former member of the U.S. Army Reserves. Surviving is his wife Darlene Tairney Stephens whom he wed on March 10, 1957 in St. Stephen, SC, two sons Clyde T. Stephens III and his wife Cheryl of Aiken, SC, and Kenneth E. Stephens of Chester, one daughter Wanda Wilson and her husband Charles T. of Chester, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday evening at Barron Funeral Home 133 Wylie St. Chester, SC, 29706.
