Fort Lawn Carol Catherine Alexander, 91, died Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at White Oak Manor in Lancaster.Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, January 28, 2018, at Barron Funeral Home with Rev. Carole Walters officiating.Interment will follow in Chester Memorial Gardens.The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Sunday at Barron Funeral Home, 133 Wyle St., Chester, SC. Carolwas born September 5, 1926 in Walhalla, South Carolina to the late, Carlos Henry and Ruby Moorman Garrett Alexander. Her family worked in the textile industry at Chicopee Mill when she was born. They later relocated to Lexington, North Carolina and Anderson, South Carolina before settling in Chester. Carol attended Chester High School and graduated in 1943. She was very active while attending school, lettering in basketball and participating in the State Basketball Tournament as well as being a majorette. As a senior in high school she began working as a part time telephone operator where she continued until graduation and then began full time. In 1949 Carol began working as a secretary for Springs Mills where she continued until 1983. Carol was recognized by Springs Mill with a silver tray and a plaque in appreciation for her continuous employment for 33 years. Upon contacting a Springs Mills employee about Carol’s passing she was remembered as “a petite lady with dimples who always had a smile.” Carol worked as a secretary for the Katherine Plant Mill boss, Butler Nanney. After retirement Carol remained very active with her interests and hobbies. Her heart was always open to any animals that crossed her path and her favorite charities were animal rescue organizations. She was known for her waterskiing talents and was always happy to help others learn to ski. Carol stayed with her mother Ruby at their home on White Oak Street and accompanied her on trips to Acapulco, Mexico and Honolulu, Hawaii. From her school days Carol had a close relationship with her dear friend, Thomas Grier Hudson. They maintained their friendship until his passing on Saturday, May 11, 2013. Carol was preceded in death by her brother Carlos Garrett Alexander (Lillian d.) 1918-2002 and her brother Neil Grant Alexander 1923-1992, daughter-in-law, Sandra Jean Austin Alexander and Neil Grant’s son, Lynn Dale Alexander (Hazel). She is survived by her older brother George Lamar Alexander (Jackie d.), their children Gary Michael Alexander, Karen Jean Alexander Niklason (Gary), Carlos Henry II (Sherry), Carol’s sister-in-law, wife of brother Neil Grant Alexander, (Lula Faye Yarborough) and their children Neil Grant Alexander Jr. and Linda Lee Alexander McKeown (Robert Christopher), Carlos Garrett Alexander’s son, Carlos Garrett Alexander Jr. (Nitsa) Surviving grandnephews and grandnieces: Kristen Alexander Caffee, Sean Alexander, Caroline McKeown, Sterling “Alec” McKeown, Christopher “Kit” McKeown, Jennifer Alexander Allen, Grant Austin Alexander, Kelly Niklason and James Michael Sanders.Surviving great-grandnephews and great grandnieces: Ayden Hughes, Connor Caffee, Landon Caffee, Jayson Garrett Alexander, Juliet McKeown, Alexander Blake Allen, Tesla Stone, Madison Alexander, Allie Alexander, Smith Sanders. The family would like to express their gratitude to Helms Gordon Residential Care Center in Fort Lawn for their kind and loving care from 2012-2018.
