Boyd Lafayette Roberts, Jr. August 8, 1930-January 10, 2024 Boyd Lafayette Roberts, Jr., 93, passed away peacefully on the evening of January 10th, surrounded by loved ones at his home in Chester, SC. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Armenia Methodist Church, Chester, S.C. on Wednesday, January 17th at 2:00 P.M. Born on August 8, 1930, Boyd was the son of the late Boyd Lafayette Roberts, Sr. and Edna Viola Roberts. Boyd was preceded in death by his parents; children Dean and Darcy; and is survived by his wife of 61years, Jackie Roberts; children Bill Roberts of Mill Valley, CA; Erik Roberts (Lisa) of Santa Rosa, CA; Marc Roberts of Cambodia; Troy Roberts (Alexa) of Chester, SC; Lance Roberts (Laura) of Chester, SC; Jodie Roberts Smith (RT) of Rock Hill, SC; grandchildren Shylia Perez, Shawna Lee, Nick Roberts (Morgan), Grant Roberts (Caroline), Zach Roberts (Elise), Taylor Birchfield (Adam), Darcy Roberts, Maddie Smith, Aiden Roberts, and Emma Smith; as well as 10 great grandchildren; along with special friends Bonnie & Tuck Silva of Grass Valley, CA; and Gary Cooper of Anderson, SC. Boyd was a graduate of Chicora High School, North Charleston, SC, where he was also a member of the 1947 South Carolina State High School Football Championship team as well as the 1948 Peanut Bowl (quad state) Football Championship. Prior to graduating from Clemson University in 1956, Mr. Roberts served for four years in the Navy; two years active at Barbers Point, Hawaii during the Korean War and two years in the Navy Reserve. He was also a member of the Sandy River Masonic Lodge #207 AFM for 70 years, being raised March 26, 1953. Boyd lived and worked in California for 20 years then returned to Chester, SC and worked for 22 years as a quality control inspector at the Winn Dixie Warehouse in Charlotte, NC. An active member of Armenia Methodist Church, Boyd also served his community as a little league baseball coach for more than 25 years, served on the Chester High School Booster Club, and helped out wherever he could. He also never missed one of his children's’ or grandchildren's’ activities. Whether it be a high school football game (for more than 50 years), baseball game, gymnastics meet, tennis match, soccer match, dance recital, volleyball match, cheerleading event, school award program, etc., Boyd was there. An avid Clemson fan, Boyd did not miss a home football game for 42 years and attended all home, away, and Clemson bowl games for more than 20 consecutive years. While he loved his Clemson Tigers, nothing surpassed the love he had for his family. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In addition, the family asks that anyone who would like to, please wear orange/purple or your favorite Clemson game day attire to honor Boyd’s love of the Clemson Tigers.
