William Joseph Carter (Billy Joe), 82, left his earthly life on October 3, 2018.Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday October 6, 2018 , at Calvary Baptist Church. The family will receive friends 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM in the fellowship hall of Calvary Baptist Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. He was born March 13, 1936 in the Baton Rouge section of Chester County to John Joe & Mattie Yarborough Carter. Educated in the schools of Chester County, where he was a school bus driver and graduated from Chester High School. He was married to Barbara Byars on June 20, 1959. Billy Joe was a veteran of the Army National Guard. Billy Joe enjoyed a thirty-year career with the Department of Highways and Public Transportation. During this career, he was awarded the Outstanding Engineering Technician of the Year for District Four. A life-long member of Calvary Church, he served on various committees. For many years, Billy Joe served as a Deacon, church treasurer, Sunday school secretary, and a member of the choir. He was very proud that he earned pins for perfect attendance in Sunday school. Billy Joe earned 53 years of perfect attendance bars. Billy Joe loved music. Every Friday night he attended Blackstock Bluegrass, where he greeted everyone at the door. He enjoyed gardening and grew the “best” tomatoes around. Billy Joe loved antiques, especially his old engine. He travelled to various antique farm shows and was awarded the Sparkleberry County Fair Antique Tractor & Engine Show Best Engine 2018. He was also an avid hunter and enjoyed sharing this passion with his brothers. Family was very important to Billy Joe. He and Barbara were the parents of two girls, Marsha & Cathy. He always enjoyed supporting his girls in their various endeavors. His pride and joy came when he gained the title of Papa. He enjoyed every minute he spent with his five grandchildren: Brian, Elizabeth Anne, William, Bailey, and Catherine. He was predeceased by his parents and Barbara’s parents, Marshall and Annie Byars, his sister and her husband, Adeline & Julian Faust, his brother, Neil Carter, and a cousin reared as a sister, Lillian Casebolt. Billy Joe is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara Carter of the home; two daughters, Marsha (John) Elliott of Salem, and Cathy (Steve) Pierce of Columbia; grandchildren: Brian Pierce of Columbia, William (Jade Sourcier)Pierce of Columbia, and Bailey Pierce of Charleston, SC, Elizabeth (Jonathan) Overman of Newnan, Ga, and Catherine Elliott of Charleston, SC; a brother, Earl (Linda) Carter of Chester; and a sister-in-law, Joyce Carter of Chester Memorials may be made toCalvary Baptist Church 610 Calvary Church Rd.
