Betty Bowman White Elizabeth (Betty) Ladd Bowman White of Chester, SC died on July 2, 2011. A Memorial Service will be held at Purity Presbyterian Church at 2:00 PM Wednesday, July 6, 2011.The family will greet friends following the service at a reception in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Born on June 6, 1919 in Kansas City, Missouri, she was the second daughter of the late Lynn Edward Daniel Bowman and Edith Ladd Bowman.She graduated from the University of Kansas with degrees in psychology and English.Following graduation, she taught at Shawnee Mission High School where she also coached women's basketball. She married William Garner White, III in 1946, who predeceased her in 1974. They made their first home in York, SC, and in 1958 moved to Chester. She is survived by her two sons and two daughters: William Garner White, IV and wife Gray of Charlotte, NC, Daniel Bowman White and wife Sallie of Greenville, SC, Katherine Anne White Wood and husband Marshall S. (Mot) of Charlotte, NC, and Elizabeth Laney White of Arlington, VA. She is also survived by a sister, Maria Bowman Evans of Hillsborough, CA and a brother, Lynn Vallentine Bowman of Leawood, KS, in addition to 9 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and 14 nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by a sister, Lucilynn Bowman Selleck of Albuquerque, NM. Mrs. White was active in church and community activities.She had a strong Christian faith and was a member of Purity Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school and served in various church offices including President of the Women of the Church, Deacon and Elder. She was a former member of the Violet Sunshine Club, Palmetto Book Club, Variety Study Club, Springmaid Golfers Association, and a number of bridge clubs. She had a great love of travel and was an avid golfer.She served on the City of Chester Planning Board and was appointed by former South Carolina Governor Richard Riley to the SC Foster Care Review Board.
