Arthur Grier Westbrook, Iii

June 28, 1937 — April 1, 2023

Catawba, SC Arthur Grier Westbrook, III, 85, loving and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, entered into the arms of his Heavenly Father and Savior on April 1, 2023. Born June 28, 1937, Grier was the son of the late A.G. Westbrook Jr. and Susie Thomas Westbrook. He was born in Chester County and grew up in Edgemoor, SC. He graduated from Lewisville High School and was a member of its inaugural football team. Grier earned both undergraduate (mathematics) and graduate (business) degrees from the University of South Carolina, running on the cross-country team. He married the love of his life, Jean Rivers Westbrook. His beautiful wife Jean was his partner, soulmate and caregiver for 62 years. They lived in West Columbia, SC, raising and loving their two daughters, Susan and Windsor. A longtime member, deacon, and elder of Centennial ARP Church in Columbia, SC, Grier also served as Treasurer of the church for fifteen years. He continued his service as an elder at Edgemoor ARP Church, retiring as Elder Emeritus. Grier had a long and impactful career with the electrical engineering, computer engineering and planning departments of SC Electric and Gas / SCANA where he served as an engineer until retirement. Always committed to the community, he was a leader of the Boy Scouts and Toastmasters and served as President of the West Columbia Chamber of Commerce. Grier enjoyed church and community basketball and softball teams and never missed an opportunity to quail hunt with his beloved Brittany Spaniels. He and Jean enjoyed farm education trips throughout the world, including Australia, Ireland, and the Galapagos Islands and they enjoyed many treasured trips with their grandchildren. Upon retirement, Grier returned to his roots in Edgemoor and treasured wonderful memories of farming with his brothers, Tommy and Billy. Grier was known for his love of the land as well as his soybeans and wheat. He grew the best tomatoes in the county (with no disrespect to other fine farmers in Chester County). Grier never met a stranger and lived his Christian faith by loving people. Through a life exemplifying kindness, humility and service, Grier taught his children and grandchildren how to work hard, value education, enjoy life and love unconditionally. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean and two daughters, Susan Westbrook Jackson (Richard) and Windsor Westbrook Sherrill (Jerry). He also leaves five grandchildren of whom he was so proud: Meghan Grier Jackson, Taylor Jackson Crumpler (Connor), Jerry F. Sherrill III, Rivers Westbrook Sherrill, and Arthur Ransome Sherrill. He loved teaching his grandchildren how to farm, hunt, and fish . Grier is also survived by two sisters, Jane Jordan (Gene) of Chester, SC, and Molly Coleman (Bob) of Greenville, SC; and sisters-in-law, Barbara A. Westbrook and Linda Westbrook of Edgemoor, SC. He was preceded in death by his brothers, William (Billy) Westbrook and Henry Thomas Westbrook. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 8, 2023 at Edgemoor ARP Church, officiated by Reverend Bob Elliott. Visitation will be held at 10 AM with a service following at 11 AM. Grier was an anatomical donor to the Carroll Campbell Alzheimer’s Research Center at Medical University of SC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made Wayne T. Patrick House (Hospice and Community Care, PO Box 993, Rock Hill SC 29731) or Edgemoor ARP Church for the Education Book Fund (PO Box 20 Edgemoor SC 29713). The Edgemoor Education Book Fund was founded by Grier Westbrook in 2002. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.barronfuneralhome.com.
