Mrs. Alice Ferguson Brown, 95, died November 29, 2018, at Piedmont Medical Center, Rock Hill, SC.The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 4, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 101 York St., Chester, SC, with the Rev. Mike Burgess officiating.The interment will be immediately following in Evergreen Cemetery, Chester.Visitation will be at Barron Funeral Home, 133 Wylie Street, Chester, SC from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM on Monday, December 3, 2018.The family also invites friends to fellowship before the service from 10:00 - 10:45 AM at Bethel United Methodist Church. Alice was born June 11, 1923, in Chester, SC, to the late Leila Grant Ferguson and Charles Boyd Ferguson.She was a graduate of Chester High School and Winthrop College.At Winthrop, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Education, as well as Master of Education and Education Specialist degrees.She completed additional graduate study at Teachers College of Columbia University in NY, NY, and at the University of South Carolina.She was a retired public school educator, with 33 years of devoted service in the schools in Chester, as well as in Florence, SC, and Rock Hill, SC.She taught students in the elementary school, junior high, and senior high levels.She also served in guidance counselor positions and in Chester County School District administrative positions. A majority of her professional years were in teaching students choral singing in elementary and secondary grades.She also instructed student in private voice and piano lessons for over 25 years.She impacted positively the lives of many, many children as well as adults, especially in the field of music over her entire life.She loved music and was blessed to be able to lead many people to enjoy and love music.She was capably playing Christmas carols on the piano, reading music from her hymn book, within the final week of her life, bringing joy to people who heard it in Harbor Chase Assisted Living where she was residing. She grew up in Bethel United Methodist Church, which she loved and of which she was a devoted member since her childhood.She served her church as church choir director for 33 years.She also served as Sunday School teacher; in member and leader roles in many committees and groups of her church; and in many other activities of her church over her entire life.She was very active in the United Methodist Women of the church, including involvement at the local church, district, and conference levels. She was a member of the Mary Adair Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.She was also very involved in numerous other organizations and activities of the Chester community. She was dedicated to and lovedall her family. Surviving are sons, Eddie (Mary Gale), Richard (Susie Bid), and Cleve (Anne); grandchildren Ellen Chiles,Christopher Brown, Margaret Self, Benjamin Brown, Jason Brown, and Allyson Brown; and eight great-grandchildren.Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Clarence Cleburne Brown, Senior (C.C.).and an infant son, Charles Robert Brown. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, Chester, SC; or to the William S. Williford Scholarship Fund, c/o Bethel UMC, 101 York St., Chester, S.C. 29706
