January 22, 1928 - March 24, 2022
Margaret Sloan Thomson McCallum was born January 22, 1928, at her grandmother’s home in Pacolet, SC, to James Andrew Thomson, Jr., and Lois Margaret Sloan Thomson. After serving the Lord and blessing all who knew her for 94 years, she went home to Heaven on March 24, 2022. A Graveside Service will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at Evergreen Cemetery, Chester, South Carolina with Reverend Clay Waldrip officiating. “Miss Margaret” grew up in Union, SC, and was the second of four children. She was predeceased by her siblings, James F. and Perrin D. Thomson and Jane Thomson Holmes, as well as her parents, her son-in-law John Robbins, and her husband of 56 years, James Meredith McCallum, Sr. She graduated from Winthrop College (now University) in 1949 with a degree in education and taught in North Carolina schools for several years before her marriage and move to Federal Point, Florida, in 1953. For the next 56 years, she was a farmer’s wife and homemaker; the mother of three children; a Sunday School teacher, nursery worker and missions leader; and a substitute teacher in both public and private schools. She was always a loving and compassionate caregiver for relatives and friends in need. In 2009, after the death of her husband, she returned to South Carolina to live with her daughter in Chester. There aren’t enough words to tell what Mama means to us. She was always there when we needed her, to keep us all straight, and help us to do our best because she always expected our best. No one ever had an unkind word to say about her, a legacy she inherited from her mother. She was unflappable in the face of minor difficulties and major disasters, through illness, fire, and hurricane, and truly knew “in whatever state I am, therewith to be content.” (Philippians 4:11) Mama taught us to love music, movies, and books, and made sure the Bible was the most important book we read. She made our clothes, cooked delicious meals, and tolerated our animals. She had all the qualities of the virtuous woman in Proverbs 31, and often worked side by side with Daddy on the farm, while still making sure breakfast was ready before dawn and supper whenever he came in from the fields. Mama supported us in our every undertaking and helped us find our places in the world. When we found our life partners, she welcomed them as another daughter and son. She embraced all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and came to cherish the title “Granny” even though when she was younger, she said, “Call me anything but Granny!” Mama taught us what it means to have and how to be a family, how to care for and treat others, and to mind our manners and respect our elders. She taught us by her example to give all we could, in time, money and talent. She taught us how to be, and taught us how to love and serve others. She made sure we knew we were loved, and we have always known what love is because of her. She was the best daughter, sister, friend, wife, daughter-in-law, mother, aunt, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great-grandmother we ever knew. She always put others before herself and when it was time to take care of her, she had a hard time letting us do it. We who are left will miss her every day, but we will try to live up to the best she always expected from us: her daughters Mary Catherine McCallum and Jane McCallum Robbins; her son and “other” daughter James Meredith and Polly McCallum; her grandchildren Andrew Duncan and Katie McCallum, Megan Elizabeth McCallum, Heather and David Pierce, Ginger and Rick Pearson; and great-grandchildren, Emma, Amelia, Devin, Luke, London, Roman and Sully. Memorial gifts may be made to Chester First Baptist Church PO Box 518, Chester, SC 29706 , the Center of Hope 127 1/2 Hudson St (P.O. Box 478), Chester, SC 29706, and Palatka First Baptist Church 501 Oak St. Palatka, FL 32177. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.barronfuneralhome .com.
